Abstract:
The TOTEM experiment is described and its physics program discussed. TOTEM alone will measure the total
pp cross-section and the elastic pp scattering over a wide range of momentum transfers. Combined with
the CMS detector, the unprecedented large particle coverage together with an excellent leading proton
measurement will allow detailed studies of a wide variety of diffractive processes, ranging from soft
to hard diffraction. As an example, Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) offers the possibility of turning the
LHC into an almost clean gluon factory, constrained by the measured momentum loss of the two forward
protons.
