Abstract:
With the start of the LHC a new era in particle physics will commence.
Never before in our field has a new enterprise posed so many challenges:
to the engineers and physicists who designed the most ambitious
accelerator and detectors ever; to the theorists who developed, over the
past 40 years, models and theories that the LHC promises to explore and
to confirm; to the phenomenologists, whose supposed understanding of the
dynamics of pp collisions at 14 TeV drove the assessment of the
detectors' discovery potential and their optimization.
As the time of reckoning approaches, tools and expectations are being
honed. I shall review this process, and speculate on the possible
scenarios emerging from the data, and their impact on future
developments in particle physics.
