Abstract:
Accumulation, storing and cooling techniques play an increasingly
important role in many areas of science. This is reflected by the awards
of Nobel prizes within the last two decades to more than ten pioneers of
particle, ion, or atom trapping and cooling. In the beginning, storage
of charged particles in ion traps was motivated purely by basic
research. Today, ion traps find numerous applications especially in
chemistry, but also for trace analysis, metrology, plasma physics,
molecular physics, quantum computation, and so on.
The presentation will concentrate on recent applications of Penning
traps in my research group to atomic and nuclear physics, namely
high-accuracy mass measurements of short-lived radionuclides, g-factor
determinations of the bound-electron in highly-charged, hydrogen-like
ions and g-factor measurements of the proton and antiproton. These
experiments are dedicated e.g. to astrophysics studies in the case of
mass measurements on radionuclides and to the determination of
fundamental constants and a CPT test in the case of the g-factor
measurements [1].
