Abstract:
Galaxies are the largest well organized systems in the Universe, which
provide through surprisingly complex interactions between micro- and
macro-physics the suitable conditions for the formation of stars and
planets. Although many phenomena taking place in galaxies are
increasingly better understood, other aspects, such as dark matter,
remain mysterious and represent serious physics challenges. The aim of
this presentation is to expose for non-experts with some physics
background our updated understanding about galaxies that has been
achieved with the current observational and computational technical
advances. Remaining problems will also be discussed.
