Abstract:
Theory and observation of mirror mode turbulence is reviewed. This is the lowest possible frequency electromagnetic turbulent mode in high temperature plasma which may or may not have been observed in space. Theory predicts that it is a non-oscillatory growing mode. Since it is of large amplitude it serves as energy input (pump) of shorter scale turbulence. This seems to be confirmed by observation. But the physics of this mode is still unclear. Though linear theory formally gives a noonvanishing growth rate it is pyhsically unclear what process is going on. It is argued that there are similarties to solid state physics. These will be discussed as far as currently possible.
