Abstract:
Magnets are a key enabling technology for a Future Circular Collider.
The CHART (Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology initiative, http://chart.ch) MagDev activity develops
magnet technology in support of the Future Circular Collider. In this
colloquium we discuss the main challenges in low-temperature and
high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies for a future hadron
collider, and what role HTS technology could play to improve the
sustainability of a future electron-positron collider. The magnet
technology developed by CHART MagDev is expected to enable synergetic
projects at PSI, that aim at either increased physics reach or improved
sustainability of experiments and facilities.
