Abstract:
In this talk, I will give a rather non-technical overview of lepton
flavour and number violation. After discussing whether we do or do not
expect phenomena exhibiting any such violation with the Standard Model,
I will explain why they are regarded as being so important when it comes
to searches for new physics. I will discuss the most relevant processes,
which experiments are hunting for, and I will also reveal why - at least
in some cases - the interpretation of experimental results can be rather
subtle. Furthermore, I will show which experimental options are still
open and why, possibly, this field yields opportunities the community
may in parts have overlooked. While one could load such a talk with
heavy formalism, my approach is rather contrary and I will try to reduce
the technicalities to a minimum.
