Abstract:
The Solar Orbiter mission is an implemented M-class mission within the
ESA's Cosmic Vision program to be launched in October 2018. Solar
Orbiter will travel close to the Sun (0.28 AU) providing combined remote
sensing and in-situ observations by 10 different instruments to
investigate how the Sun creates the heliosphere. This seminar will
highlight the science of Solar Orbiter in particular the aspect of
particle acceleration during solar eruptions, with a focus on the hard
X-ray instrument STIX onboard Solar Orbiter. STIX is the main Swiss
contribution to Solar Orbiter led by FHNW and applies a Fourier-imaging
technique using a set of tungsten grids, similar to one used by the
HESSI mission.
