Abstract:
What is the size of the atomic nucleus? This deceivably simple question is difficult to answer. While the electric charge distributions in atomic nuclei were measured accurately already half a century ago, our knowledge of the distribution of neutrons is still deficient. In addition to constraining the size of atomic nuclei, the neutron distribution also impacts the nuclear equation of state. In this talk I will review the modern nuclear theory approach to answer this question, focusing on the nuclear potential and currents. I will also discuss ab-initio calculations of neutron distribution, weak form factor, and polarizability in neutron-rich nuclei. The latter two being the target of precision measurements.
