I will present an introduction to the theory of quantum phase transitions,
and the novel physics present in their vicinity. The theory applies to many
interesting condensed matter systems including the high temperature
superconductors. I will argue that the theory sheds light on many of the
most puzzling features of the phase diagrams of these superconductors.
