Abstract:
With the three accelerator facilities of the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics at ETHZ experiments with energetic ions in range between several keV and about 50 MeV can be performed in connection with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry and Materials Sciences. During the past few years we have focused on systematic investigations of fundamental processes involved in generating, selecting and detecting individual ions which are the precondition to push forward the performance of ion beam techniques towards physical limits. Based on the results of our studies, we have designed and constructed novel AMS systems and could significantly improve our instrumentation. In my presentation, I will give an overview on the status of our activities and I will summarize the latest progress. In several examples I will illustrate the new opportunities resulting from the improvements of our experimental techniques.
