Abstract:
The LHC has started operation with beam in 2008 after many years of
design, construction, installation and commissioning. The LHC presents
many challenges for the Safety of personnel, the public and the
environment, and its Safety systems have been developed, installed and
commissioned to best meet these challenges. I will give a non-specialist
overview of the Safety challenges of the LHC, and will present its
safety systems and their major characteristics, from the point of view
of the operator of the installation. The interaction between Safety
systems and with the rest of the installation will also be emphasized.
Finally I will try to give an idea of how a real safety event looks like
as seen from the Control Room and will hint at the lessons learned.
