Abstract:
Gamma-ray astronomy at high (E>100 MeV) and very-high (E>100 GeV) energies has
made a tremendous leap during the last decade: the amount of detected gamma-ray
emitters has increased by over an order of magnitude, new source classes have
been discovered, new subclasses of sources have been established based on their
gamma-ray properties, and the known sources are now resolved on unprecedented
spatial and temporal scales revealing new properties. The class of Active
Galaxies are among the most powerful and energetic gamma-ray emitters, and some
of these object radiate the bulk of their electromagnetic power at energies
beyond the current instruments range and sensitivity. The study of these sources
requires the simultaneous use of the high and very high energy sky brought to us
by the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope and ground-based Cherenkov telescopes.
